Two Practices, One Journey: Corinne’s Path to Strength & Stillness

Yoga and CrossFit might look like two completely different universes—one rooted in breath and stillness, the other defined by barbells, chalk, and intensity. But once you step inside both worlds, the overlap is surprisingly obvious.

I started practicing yoga when I was 18. I was a freshman in college, a lifelong athlete suddenly unsure where to channel all that restless energy. One afternoon, I wandered into a yoga class at the campus gym, and something clicked instantly. For the first time in a long time, I felt grounded and, at the same time, challenged. Yoga arrived right when I needed it most—and it’s been with me for over 15 years.

What kept me coming back was progress and new challenges. In yoga, there’s always a new level to achieve: a deeper expression of a pose, a smoother transition, a moment where the body softens and something that was once difficult suddenly feels natural. And no matter how advanced the shapes become, the ultimate benchmark of mastery is always the same: the ability to breathe through it.

Years later, at the tail end of the pandemic, I stumbled into CrossFit the same way—feeling lost and lonely, craving a new challenge, and looking for something to shake up a stagnant routine. And just like that first yoga class, CrossFit hooked me instantly. The adrenaline of learning new movements, the camaraderie, the challenge of measurable progress—it had everything I didn’t know I was looking for.

But what surprised me most wasn’t the similarity in the learning curve; it was how seamlessly the two practices started to blend. A squat? That’s Malasana by another name. Push-ups? Chaturanga Dandasana without the Sanskrit. V-ups? Hi, Navasana. (Sadly, CrossFit lacks Savasana… but I’ll keep manifesting.)

Beyond the familiar shapes, the deeper connection lies in what both disciplines demand: presence, patience, and a willingness to sit in discomfort. Yoga teaches me how to breathe through intensity; CrossFit teaches me how powerful that breath can make me. Yoga gives me the mobility and body awareness to move better under a barbell; CrossFit gives me the strength, stability, and confidence to achieve some of the most difficult poses. Would I have ever gotten off the wall to achieve a handstand if it weren’t for CrossFit? Honestly, probably not.

The most rewarding part has been watching how each one elevates the other. Yoga is the recovery tool that keeps me training and keeps my body free from injury. CrossFit is the strength foundation that evolves my yoga practice. And together, they create a balance I never expected.
