How CrossFit Became a Lifestyle for Rene

I started CrossFit at the beginning of 2018 with Brooke during a 6-week challenge. I remember that time clearly because it came right after a huge turning point in my life – I had just quit smoking on January 17, 2018. Joining CrossFit felt like the first step toward becoming a healthier, stronger version of myself.
At the time, I knew something needed to change. My job requires constant movement and heavy lifting, and I felt like my body wasn’t performing the way it used to. I wanted to be more flexible, have more energy, and lose weight. One morning, while driving to work, I saw the sign for CrossFit Train. I texted Brooke and asked if she would accept a 44-year-old, 250-pound guy into her challenge – and she did.
Life looks very different now. As a kid, I grew up playing baseball and loving movement. After high school that stopped, and it wasn’t until 2007 that I picked up sports again. But priorities change, and our bodies change too. Even though my mindset stayed the same – live your life and let others live theirs – I knew I needed something more.
I’m incredibly grateful for every coach who has guided me along the way. Brooke was the one who gave me my start, and today I’m supported by an amazing team: Jimmy, Abby, Emma, Mike, and Matt. Each of you has helped shape my journey, and I couldn’t be more thankful.
Now, at almost 52 years old, I feel strong, healthy, and ready to live another 40 years – with intention. Starting my day with a workout keeps me motivated and centered. When I miss a day, I feel it. CrossFit has become more than exercise for me – it’s a lifestyle, a community, and a commitment to myself.
