From Left Field to Athlete Mindset – Brandon’s Story of Transformation

When I was six, I played left field—kind of. I was clumsy, uncoordinated, and spent more time singing Bee Gees songs than paying attention to fly balls (I didn’t catch a single one all season). Athletics never felt like my lane, and I carried that belief with me for decades.
Even as I ran marathons in my 20s and biked the California coast—twice—I still didn’t see myself as an athlete. I stayed active to outrun a tough family history of obesity and heart disease, not because I felt strong or confident.
Walking into a gym felt like stepping into someone else’s world. It wasn’t mine.
But that began to change as I approached 50. I joined Train Denver looking for what I called “curb appeal.” I wanted to see change—visibly, tangibly—because I was feeling the shift into a new decade of life. And change came.
My body fat dropped 10%. My lean muscle mass increased 15%. My doctor told me I’m the healthiest I’ve ever been. And yet, the biggest transformation wasn’t physical.
It was mental. Emotional. Identity-based.
For the first time, I started to believe I could call myself what I never had before: an athlete. As Coach Emma told me one day, “It’s a mindset.” And that stuck.
Now, I don’t shrink when I miss a movement or run the wrong way. I don’t let perfectionism or old stories take the wheel. I just keep showing up—present, empowered, and proud of how far I’ve come.
Train gave me more than a workout. It gave me the tools—and the community—to rewrite a belief I’d held for nearly my entire life. Today, I hike 14’ers. I chase new challenges. I show up not to fix something, but to honor what’s already possible.
It’s not about a number, a title, or a flawless workout. It’s about finally seeing what’s always been there:
Strength. Commitment. And the mindset of an athlete.
